International Campaign to Ban Landmines statement on the allegations of landmine use on the border between Thailand and Cambodia
Geneva, 29 July 2025 - The International Campaign to Ban Landmines is concerned by recent reports of landmine casualties on the border between Thailand and Cambodia.
With regards to the reported new use of anti-personnel landmines, we are aware of the allegations and the counter-allegations. The ICBL-CMC urges an independent investigation. The ICBL recognizes that rumours and allegations cause anxiety and suffering, especially to those being displaced by the conflict. Fact based assessments done by neutral parties will give clarity now that there is a ceasefire. We encourage the parties to bring substantive information to the Mine Ban Treaty’s President and Committee on Cooperative Compliance.
Both parties must abide by their obligations under the Mine Ban Treaty and never use antipersonnel mines under any circumstances.
Antipersonnel mines should never be used due to their indiscriminate nature and the long-term harm they cause. The ICBL welcomes the recent ceasefire and calls on Cambodia and Thailand to resume demining on the border region.
